Visit Kings at Groundswell to learn about green cover
As the official cover crop partner at this year's Groundswell event, Kings will show the difference green cover can make to ground conditions as drilling trials take place in a number of demonstration plots.
Plots at the event include straight oil radish, Tillage radish, turnip rape, buckwheat and phacelia as well as a number of mixes, including Kings’ popular Soil Structure Mix and Vitality Mix.
Grown during a relatively short window before a cash crop, cover crops have a whole range of benefits to suit different needs. Oil radish, for example, is an excellent nitrogen catcher, produces high organic matter yields to improve soil structure and has reduced beet cyst nematode populations by up to 90% in trials. Kings Soil Structure Mix also adds large volumes of organic matter and includes deep rooting species that improve difficult, compacted soils, as well as meeting Ecological Focus Area requirements. Benefits of other green cover crops include increased soil health, livestock grazing, reduced spring cultivations and weed and disease suppression.
Kings is heavily involved in on farm testing and evaluation of cover crops, with a trials network now covering over 200 hectares across more than 40 UK sites. Among these is a three year project with the James Hutton Institute at Dundee, ongoing work with the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust and Frontier’s 3D Thinking sites. Over the last six years, vast amounts of data have been gathered to inform advice and help growers to progress their green cover efforts to make a real difference on farm.
To achieve maximum results with cover crops several factors must be considered, including target benefits, planting date, following crop timings, soil type, location and the rotation as a whole. Expert advice is essential in making the right decision.
Kings produces all its own mixtures, which are fully proven in the UK. Supported by our colleagues at Frontier, Kings’ service and technical advice is unrivalled. Expert advisors are on hand at Groundswell to discuss variety choice, establishment, management and destruction to help you select the best option for your farm’s needs and ultimately improve your future profits.
